SatSAFE
What if your vehicle breaks down in a really remote area? There are still many hectares of bush where Telstra’s CDMA does not reach, but resource industry workers traverse these areas every day. Finding out quickly about a vehicle breakdown, injury or other problem means a safer more efficient operation.

With this premise, Atamo developed the SatSAFE, a small device that can be carried or mounted on the dash and allows communication back to base of a few simple messages, such as “here I am” or “help!” Because this is via satellite, “base” can be anywhere in a continent-sized footprint, and will work worldwide.

Services provided

The SatSAFE was developed under contract forsatsafe
OmniSTAR, who retain exclusive rights to the
design. OmniSTAR is part of the worldwide Fugro
group, headquartered in the Netherlands;
OmniSTAR-AM provides precise positioning,
navigation and asset monitoring services to
clients throughout Australasia.

Atamo provided complete managed product
development, from initial problem definition with
OmniSTAR, through design to manufacture,
including developing production test jigs. Development included circuit boards, enclosures, software and interface to a number of models of satellite modems, plus compliance testing. Key to the design was battery management circuitry, so that the unit can continue to operate with minimal drain on the vehicle’s power.

Our deliverables included:

  • An update of an existing specification to reflect current thinking on the product
  • Our client owns the IP: All design files, as schematic capture, design notes, and software
  • Biweekly progress reports at the client's premises
  • Production plans, prototype test plans and results
  • Ongoing support and feature enhancements

Benefits to our client

Our client was able to better address their market with a product specifically designed for their needs. By applying engineering design for manufacture, the company can provide the same solution to its customers around the world.

Assignment charges

Atamo charges at rates for the skills required for each particular assignment. This work involved senior engineering staff at an hourly rate, with a cap based on overall project estimates.
